Use it or loose it
After the stroke and finally back to my home I was hit by the seriousness of my limitations. While in Hospital we are in a controled space, created to protect us and recover our mobility, we live in a bubble, everyting is safe, there is always someone near to help. Outside in the real world it’s the opposite of this, The sidewalk is irregular, the people are impatient, the environment is harsh, we feel so fatigued at the end of the day that we only want to get in bed and sleep. But I keep on thinking in this words I heard repetedly from my Therapihist; Use it or loose it. To prevent further losses I came up with a three-step plan
Return to my boat
If I pulled off the first couple of moves in my plan, I'd be all set to chase my ultimate dream: getting back to the ocean and hitting the waves again on my old boat, Noah.
Return to the water
Water has been a constant presence in my life for as long as I can recall. Whether I was swimming, surfing, or diving, I always felt my best when I was in the water. My first summer job was at the neighborhood swimming pool, and now it was time to go back there for some hydrotherapy.
Return to my work
What worried me the most was whether I could keep working, support myself, and stay independent, without being a burden to anyone because of my disability.
